Common questions
Why do some products have no score?
These products don't get a score, and the product page says why:
- alcohol (including alcohol-free beer, wine and cider) and non-food products;
- infant and toddler foods and formula, sports nutrition, protein powders, vitamins and supplements (excluded by the Health Star Rating guide);
- products used in tiny amounts, such as spices, seasonings, salt, tea and coffee;
- products with no nutrition panel in the supermarket listing, or a panel whose numbers contradict each other.
If the nutrition panel is missing, you can add it with photos; once approved, the product can be scored, and you earn a day of Premium. See how scoring works.
How does the score relate to the Health Star Rating on the pack?
The nutrition part of the score (0–70 points) is converted from the Health Star Rating, using the one printed on the pack when there is one. Additives (0–20) and processing (0–10) are then added, so the 0–100 score isn't simply the star rating rescaled.
When the pack has no rating, we estimate the nutrition part with the public algorithm, but we never show that estimate as an official star rating. See how scoring works.
Where does the product information come from?
From public New Zealand and Australian supermarket listings and user contributions, updated daily, for the country you choose under Me › Product region. Supermarket data can be wrong and recipes change, so the pack in your hand has the final say. If you spot an error, tap Report on the product page.
What if a barcode won't scan or the product isn't found?
Barcodes on weighed deli, meat and loose-produce labels only encode the price of that portion, not a product, so search by name for something similar instead.
Products we don't have yet are common at Asian grocers, Costco and for new lines; you can add them with 3 photos. If a barcode is hard to read, type the digits printed under it.
Where is my health profile stored? What happens if I change phones?
Only on this iPhone. It isn't included in iCloud backups and we never receive it, so you'll need to set it up again on a new phone. See the privacy policy.
How do I restore my purchase?
Make sure your iPhone is signed in to the Apple Account you bought with, then tap Restore Purchases on Gotcha's Premium page. Family members using Premium through Family Sharing can restore it the same way.
How do I cancel a subscription or get a refund?
Open Settings on your iPhone, tap your name, tap Subscriptions, then choose Gotcha. Cancel at least 24 hours before the current period ends; Premium continues until the end of the period you've paid for.
Refunds are handled by Apple: request one at reportaproblem.apple.com.
How do I delete my account?
Open the Me page in the app, tap Delete account and confirm. Your account details, Premium records and reward records are deleted, and your contributions are no longer linked to you; published product information stays.
Deleting your account doesn't cancel an Apple subscription, so cancel it in Settings as described above. If you'd also like the photos you contributed deleted, email us.
How do reward days work?
- Contributions: each approved, complete contribution earns 1 day of Premium. For food, that means clear photos of the front of the pack, the ingredient list and the nutrition panel.
- Invitations: when a friend signs in with Apple or Google (on an account created in the last 30 days) and enters your invitation code, you each get 7 days. Each phone can claim once.
- You need to sign in with Apple or Google to claim rewards; rewards earned before you sign in are kept for you.
- Days earned while you're subscribed are saved and start when your subscription ends.
- Reward days have no cash value, and the rules may change. See the terms of use.
I represent a brand or retailer. How do I correct product information?
Email support@chamingbai.com with the barcode, what needs correcting and the evidence (for example a photo of the pack or the official specification). We'll check it and correct it as soon as we can.
